?Introducing Ava’s Journey – Shared by Her Mum

?At Vranch House, we have the privilege of supporting many remarkable children and families through some of the most challenging moments of their lives. Today, we are honoured to share the story of Ava — a courageous young girl whose determination has inspired everyone who has met her.

?Ava’s journey, written by her mum, is a powerful account of resilience, hope, and the strength of a family navigating an unimaginable diagnosis. From her sudden illness and intensive treatment to her long road of rehabilitation, Ava has shown extraordinary bravery.

? Our team has been proud to play a part in her recovery, providing physiotherapy, rehabilitation, and even Hippotherapy to help her rebuild her strength and confidence. Watching her progress has been a privilege.

? Please read Ava’s story on our Facebook Page (link in Bio)

Ava’s Journey ?
Last year, Ava’s world changed overnight when she was suddenly diagnosed with leukaemia. What followed was months of intense treatment, a long stay in intensive care, and the toughest fight of her young life.

But Ava is a warrior. With incredible medical care, the love of her family, and the dedicated support of the Vranch House rehabilitation team — including her much‑loved Hippotherapy sessions — she has made extraordinary progress. She’s back at school, walking again, riding horses, and rebuilding her strength every day.
Her courage inspires us all.

? World Cancer Day: Supporting Children at Vranch House Through and Beyond Cancer Treatment

On World Cancer Day, Vranch House stands alongside every child and family affected by cancer. Today, we want to shine a light on the vital role rehabilitation plays in recovery — especially for children diagnosed with leukaemia, the most common childhood cancer in the UK.

Around 650–700 children under 15 are diagnosed with leukaemia each year, with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) making up the majority of cases. Thanks to advances in treatment, survival rates for ALL now reach around 90% five years post‑treatment, giving many children the chance to return to the activities they love.

How Cancer Affects Children Physically:
Cancer treatment can significantly impact a child’s mobility, strength and stamina. Long hospital stays, fatigue, muscle weakness and reduced exercise tolerance are all common — and this is where Vranch House steps in.

How Vranch House Supports Children During and After Treatment:

? Physiotherapy
• Strengthening and mobility programmes
• Support with balance, coordination and gait
• Gradual return to physical activity at home and school
• Careful monitoring to avoid overexertion

? Occupational Therapy
• Support with fine motor skills and daily activities
• Strategies for school participation and self‑care
• Adaptations to help children engage in play and learning

? Specialist Therapies
• Hydrotherapy for gentle strengthening and pain relief
• Hippotherapy to build core strength, posture and confidence
• Innowalk sessions to promote safe, supported movement

Working Together:
Rehabilitation is a team effort. Our therapists work closely with families, carers and schools to ensure each child’s recovery is safe, consistent and paced to their needs.

Our Commitment:
At Vranch House, we are dedicated to helping children regain strength, independence and joy in movement — from the early stages of treatment to long‑term recovery.

? Meet Rob & Chris — Running the 2026 London Marathon for Vranch House ?

We’re incredibly proud to share that brothers Rob and Chris will be taking on the London Marathon on Sunday 26th April 2026, all in support of Vranch House Children’s Charity.

This challenge is deeply personal for their family. Rob’s daughter, Poppy, has been an outpatient at Vranch House for nine years — regularly attending physiotherapy, occupational therapy, orthotic appointments, and specialist speech and language therapy.

So much of the work we do at Vranch and what we provide is only possible because of charitable donations and amazing people like Chris and Rob taking on challenges like this raising vital funds for us. Around 40% of the cost of every medical appointment and every day of education is funded by Vranch House Children’s Charity through fundraising and donations. Some of the most transformative therapies — including hippotherapy, music therapy and Innowalk sessions — rely entirely on charitable support.

By backing Rob and Chris, you’re helping children experience more comfort, more independence, more joy and more opportunity.

? If you’d like to cheer them on or add your support, you can visit their fundraising page here:

justgiving.com/page/rob-and-chris

To everyone who has donated so far — thank you.

Thank you for helping make a life‑changing difference for extraordinary children and families across Devon.

What a day at Sandy Park on Sunday 18th January!

Our amazing Vranch House volunteers were out bucket collecting at the Exeter Chiefs match against Cardiff — and even though the weather was a bit soggy, the smiles never stopped.

And to top it off… we won!

A huge thank you to every single volunteer who braved the rain, and to the incredible Chiefs (and Cardiff) fans who donated so generously to the Exeter Chiefs Foundation. We’re proud to be one of their designated charities, and your support truly makes a difference.

Celebrating National Paediatrician Day ?✨

Today we’re honouring the incredible paediatric clinicians who dedicate their lives to supporting children’s health, development, and wellbeing.

At Vranch House Charity & Therapy Centre, we’re lucky to work with some truly exceptional professionals — including Miss Laura Tillotson, Paediatric Orthopaedic Consultant at the Royal Devon & Exeter NHS Trust.

Last week, I caught up with Laura during one of our monthly joint orthopaedic clinics, which bring together:
?‍⚕️ A Paediatric Orthopaedic Consultant
?‍⚕️ A Consultant Paediatrician
?‍? The child’s physiotherapist

All under one roof, in a familiar and child‑friendly space.

Laura shared why these clinics matter:

“Clinics at Vranch House are held in a familiar, relaxing and child‑friendly environment. Having support locally is important for a child‑centred approach. They bring great value to the service and provide an instant MDT environment, cementing the links between RDUH and Vranch House Charity and Therapy Centre.”

And when she’s not caring for children, Laura is training in Taekwondo — currently working towards her green belt. ??

As Head of Therapies, I’m proud of the inclusive, collaborative environment we’ve built. These clinics don’t just improve outcomes — they strengthen relationships, build shared expertise, and help children move, participate, and thrive.

We’re grateful to have Laura, Richard, Patrick and Helen as part of the Vranch House family. ?

? Rosie’s Story
We’re honoured to share this heartfelt reflection from Rosie’s parents, Ruth and Mike. From her earliest visits, they saw how our team could support her communication, mobility and confidence — and six years later, Rosie continues to shine.

She’s now a confident, sociable and wonderfully cheeky young person whose communication skills have grown in amazing ways. Ruth and Mike’s kind words about our staff mean so much to us, and we’re incredibly grateful for the trust families place in Vranch House every day.

Thank you to Rosie’s family for sharing their story so generously. Stories like this remind us why our work matters ?— and why community, compassion and specialist support can make such a powerful difference. ?

We’re sharing a short snapshot here, and you can read her family’s full reflection on our Facebook Page (link in bio)

Rosie’s Story ?
Rosie joined Vranch House six years ago at just 4 years old — and she’s been flourishing ever since. From her early days learning Makaton and exploring new ways to communicate, to becoming the confident, sociable and wonderfully cheeky young person she is today, Rosie continues to amaze everyone around her.
One unforgettable moment was the day she took her first independent steps at school — a milestone that still brings happy tears to her family.
Vranch has become a second home for Rosie and her family, filled with celebrations, friendships and countless joyful memories. Their gratitude for the staff who support her every day means the world to us.

This is just a small glimpse of Rosie’s story — the full version is now on our Facebook page. ? Link in bio to read more

? Vranch House Staff Winter Wellbeing ?

On Friday afternoon, some of our amazing team took part in a high‑energy wellbeing session with Tamsin from Drums4Health — and what a boost it was.

Rhythm, movement, laughter, and a whole lot of smiles filled the room.

Drumming together reminded us how powerful it is to pause, connect, and look after our minds and bodies.

A stronger and happy team means even better support for the incredible children and families we serve every day.

Thank you, Tamsin, for bringing the beat — and the joy — to Vranch House.

On International Day of Education, we’re proud to share something that has transformed the way we teach, support, & celebrate our incredible pupils at Vranch—The VIEW Curriculum.

VIEW is a curriculum designed entirely around the children and young people we serve. It reflects their identities, their needs, and their potential.
VIEW stands for:
• V – Vranch House
• I – Individual
• E – Education
• W – Wellbeing

VIEW isn’t a list of subjects. It’s a philosophy. A shared language. A way of seeing the whole child — their communication, their wellbeing, their achievements, & their journey.

? Why VIEW Matters
Traditional curriculum models didn’t capture the richness of our pupils’ progress or the therapeutic, sensory, physical, & communication needs that shape their learning. VIEW was created to:
• recognise progress in all its forms
• celebrate communication in every modality
• embed wellbeing into daily practice
• integrate therapeutic & educational approaches
• give staff a shared framework for planning & assessment
• help families understand & celebrate their child’s growth

? How VIEW Shapes Daily Life
VIEW influences everything we do — planning, teaching, assessment, interventions, & celebration. It ensures learning is intentional, personalised, & meaningful for every child, every day.

? The Impact
Since introducing VIEW, we’ve seen:
• increased confidence in communication (verbal, AAC, gestural, sensory)
• deeper engagement in learning & play
• improved emotional regulation
• greater independence
• stronger relationships between pupils & staff
• families feeling more connected to their child’s progress

VIEW helps us see our pupils more clearly & helps them see themselves as capable, valued learners.

? Celebrating Education, Every Day
On this International Day of Education, we celebrate a curriculum that is purposeful, personal, & profoundly child‑centred. VIEW reflects everything we believe in at Vranch House: education that honours individuality & creates space for every young person to thrive at their own pace

? Education with purpose. Progress with meaning. Wellbeing at the centre.
That’s VIEW.

☕️ Stay & Play Coffee Morning at Vranch House ?

Come and join us at our next Stay & Play Coffee Morning at Vranch House School and Centre.

This welcoming group is for parents and carers of children aged 0–5 with additional needs, offering a safe, relaxed space to meet others, chat, and enjoy some time together.

? Siblings are very welcome (as long as they’re supervised by parents/carers).

? No connection to Vranch House is needed – just come along and feel at home.

On 31st May, a wonderful group of bus escorts who work with our pupils every day will be taking on a 10km Princetown Walk on Dartmoor to raise funds for Vranch House School and Centre.

Known as the Vranchettes from Jas Cars, this incredible team support our children daily by safely bringing them to and from school — and now they’re going the extra mile (literally) to support Vranch House beyond the school run.

Six walkers will be taking part, all walking to help raise money for Phase 2 of our pathway project, linking the main school building to the hydrotherapy pool. Phase 1 has already started!

This much-needed path will improve accessibility and make moving between buildings safer and easier for the children and young people who rely on these facilities.

Please dig deep and donate if you can. Every contribution helps us create better, more accessible spaces for the children and families we support.

Thank you for supporting Vranch House Children’s Charity.

? It might be ‘Blue Monday’… but these smiles tell a different story.

Today is often called the “most depressing day of the year,” but we know that real life doesn’t work like that. Feelings come and go, and every day brings its own mix of challenges and bright moments.

The joy in this collage is a perfect reminder of what truly lifts us up — community, connection, and the incredible spirit of our pupils here at Vranch House. Their resilience and positivity shine through even the greyest January day.

So instead of leaning into the Blue Monday myth, we’re choosing to focus on kindness and care:

✨ Check in with someone

✨ Share a smile

✨ Celebrate the small wins

✨ Reach out if things feel heavy

If today feels a little “blue,” you’re not alone. And supporting a local charity you care about can be a powerful way to bring a little light back in.

? Let’s turn today into a moment of hope and togetherness.

Building confidence beyond the classroom ?

Our pupils have been out exploring the community — from IKEA and soft play to Exeter Library — practising real‑life skills, building independence, and discovering what they love.

These visits help our young people feel seen, valued, and included in their local community. They return more confident, more communicative, and more ready to take on the world.

If you know of community opportunities or local businesses in and around Exeter who’d love to connect with us, we’d love to hear from you ?

? Supporter Spotlight: Meet Nicky! ?

Everyone at Vranch House Children’s Charity is sending a huge cheer to Nicky, our pupil Lisa’s incredible Aunty, who is taking on both the Brighton Marathon in April and the Great West Run in May to raise funds for our charity.

Nicky has been absolutely smashing her training — braving the outdoors in rain, wind, and even ice, and heading to the gym when the weather really hasn’t played ball. No matter what, she’s been out there putting in the miles, proudly wearing her Vranch House running vest and keeping hydrated with her Vranch House water bottle. #whodoesn'tlovemerch

Her dedication is inspiring, and every step she takes helps support the children and young people who rely on the specialist services we provide.

Tomorrow, our amazing team will be taking on the @smartpropertygroup Cycle — pedalling with purpose to raise awareness and support for children and young people at Vranch House.

And we couldn’t resist sharing the news in true festive style… inspired by the iconic Love Actually card scene ??.

With any luck, this time tomorrow we’ll be nearly at the North Pole (well… maybe just Exeter!) — but every mile we ride helps us get closer to brighter futures for the children we support.

We’re still looking for more cyclists to join the journey, and every bit of support makes a huge difference. Together, we can turn pedal power into life‑changing opportunities. ?

?‍♀️❄️ Cycle to the North Pole Fundraiser – This Thursday! ❄️?‍♂️

The incredible team at @SmartPropertyGroup are taking on the frosty challenge to cycle all the way to the North Pole — and they won’t be alone! Even some of the Vranch House staff, including Kate, will be hopping on a bike alongside lots of other amazing people.

? Kate Moss rides a pupil’s trike in our school grounds, thinking she’s off to join the adventure! Don't panic SMART-we stopped her just in time!

This challenge is raising money for three wonderful charities:

•            ? Little Harbour (CHSW)
•            ? Young Lives Vs Cancer
•            ? Vranch House (who are very grateful!)

? Businesses, you can join in too: sign up to cycle some miles or donate to help us reach our icy finish line.

Don’t forget to wear your best Christmas jumper on the day – it’s Christmas Jumper Day after all!

We love music at Vranch House School, whether experimenting with sensory sounds or singing panto songs at the tops of our voices!

Today, staff and students were delighted to welcome Adam Ockelford, SEND music expert and founder of the @soundsofintent Charity and the @theambertrust
to help us develop the ways we integrate music across the school.

We spent time making music with children in class during the day, followed by an inspirational training session for staff.

It also turns out that Adam has a very low voice, which Alek found hilarious!

✨ Yesterday we welcomed Smirthwaite to Vranch House to demo their Snooze sleep system.

Getting the right position at night is so important to support postural management at nighttime, and our therapy team were keen to see how the system supports children in achieving this.

Although we didn’t manage to get photos during the session, Elton (our trusty moving & handling doll!) stepped in to help. He didn't get to try out the Smirthwaite sleep systems, but showed us just how tricky — and downright mad — his sleeping positions can get without proper support. Poor Elton really missed the comfort of Snooze!

? Sleep systems make a huge difference, and we’re excited to explore how Snooze could benefit the children we support.

Maple Class had an exciting OLLY APPROVED delivery today! ✨️

Due to some amazing donations the early years class has now got some soft play climbing equipment to help with building independence and Physical development as well as being lots of fun!

We have some great light up cause and effect toys and today Olly had great fun trying them out!

He was able to maintain his balance when reaching out of his base of support to find the colour and sound buttons, play with the floor piano in prone and floor sitting, it was so lovely to see him realise that his hands and feet were making the noise on the mat.

With the help of Simon our amazing groundsman we are going to make an accessible sensory wall that our younger pupils can access during play.

All of your donations no matter how big or small are used to help in all areas of our pupil’s development when they are working hard and in play.

Thankyou, you really are making a difference!

✨ What a magical evening! ✨

Last night, some of our wonderful Vranch House families were invited to a truly unforgettable Christmas celebration as part of our partnership with Princesshay as their Charity of the Year.

Our very own William Prosser had the incredible honour of pressing the BIG button to switch on Exeter’s Christmas lights! ?? We are all so proud of him — what a moment!

The children were over the moon to meet Santa and his cheerful elf Bubbles, who brought so much joy, sparkle, and festive fun. They were both absolutely amazing… and even learned some Makaton signs from our talented pupil Ottilie! ??

A heartfelt thank you to everyone at Princesshay who helped make the evening so special. Magical memories were made, and we are so grateful.

It may only be November… but we’re definitely feeling Christmassy now! ❤️??

Poppy’s story ? WOW Moment Alert! ?

Today we’re celebrating one of the most heartwarming milestones we’ve ever witnessed at Vranch House — and it belongs to our amazing pupil, Poppy ?

After six years of living with a nasogastric feeding tube, Poppy has reached a life-changing moment: the tube is out! ?

Born three months premature, Poppy has overcome challenge after challenge with courage, determination, and a love for blackcurrant juice ?. With months of practice and support from her family and professionals around her including her dietitian, speech and language therapist, and doctor, she’s now able to drink safely from a special cup — and for the first time, we can see her whole beautiful face.

Her parents said it best:

? Remembrance Day at Vranch House ?

Today, our Elm Class pupils gathered by the Vranch House Family Tree to reflect and remember. They proudly displayed a beautiful giant poppy they created together in class—a symbol of respect and gratitude for all who served and sacrificed.

We join the nation in honoring the bravery and resilience of those who gave so much for our freedom.
“At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.”

Why the poppy?

🌺 Remembrance Day at Vranch House 🌺 Today, our Elm Class pupils gathered by the Vranch House Family Tree to reflect and remember. They proudly displayed a beautiful giant poppy they created together in class—a symbol of respect and gratitude for all who served and sacrificed. We join the nation in honoring the bravery and resilience of those who gave so much for our freedom. “At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.” Why the poppy? The poppy became a symbol of remembrance after World War I, inspired by the flowers that grew on the battlefields of Flanders. Wearing a poppy honors those who lost their lives and reminds us of the hope for peace. #RemembranceDay #LestWeForget #VranchHouseFamily #CommunityTogether

? Local Leadership Meets Frontline Care
A milestone moment for children’s physiotherapy in North Devon ?

On Friday, we had the pleasure of welcoming Ian Roome MP, Member of Parliament for North Devon, to our Vranch House Children’s Physiotherapy Department at Barnstaple Health Centre.

As a passionate advocate for NHS services and community health, Ian’s visit was a powerful step toward improving support for children and young people with physical disabilities or difficulties in our region. We spoke about the need to reduce inequalities in care across Devon and expand access to specialist services in Barnstaple and surrounding rural communities.

Ian met with our amazing team — Kate Moss, Rebecca Wheeler, Susanna Mitchell, and paediatric physiotherapists Elaine and Ryan — to hear firsthand about the impact of our work and the challenges families face.

His support helps amplify the voices of our community and ensures that Vranch House continues to be a beacon of innovation, compassion, and inclusive care. ?

Thank you, Ian, for taking the time to visit us and share in our mission. Together, we’re building a stronger, more inclusive North Devon for every child. ?

? Honouring a Legacy at Vranch House ?

On Friday, we were deeply moved as Margaret Montgomery, alongside her children Rob and Karen, placed engraved leaves on our Vranch House family tree — a tribute to their beloved husband and father, Alan Montgomery.

Vranch House was founded by Kay Vranch, Alan’s mother, with Alan at its heart. Though Alan is sadly no longer with us, his legacy continues to shape everything we do. Margaret has been a cherished member of our charity for many years, and her recent visits have been especially meaningful. She’s been lovingly sorting through our archives, preserving old photographs and memories, ensuring that the rich history of Vranch House is never forgotten.

This moment was not only a celebration of Alan’s life but also a testament to the enduring love and dedication of his family. ?

? World Mental Health Day 2025 ?

Today, we join the global community in recognising that mental health is not a luxury — it’s a right.

At Vranch House, we believe that every individual deserves access to compassionate, inclusive, and holistic care. Mental well-being is an essential part of the journey for our children, families, and staff.

? You are not alone.
? It’s okay to ask for help.
? Together, we thrive.

This afternoon, we’re marking the day with our half-termly staff wellbeing session — and it just so happens to fall on World Mental Health Day! Staff will be enjoying some peaceful pebble painting, sharing a cuppa and a chat, and taking time to connect and recharge. A small reminder that caring for others starts with caring for ourselves.

Mental well-being is an essential part of the journey for our children, families, and staff. 🧠 You are not alone. 💬 It’s okay to ask for help. 💚 Together, we thrive. #WorldMentalHealthDay #WMHD2025 #MentalHealthMatters #VranchHouseExeter #StaffWellbeing #ItsOkayToNotBeOkay #InclusiveCare

?? World Cerebral Palsy Day — a day to celebrate courage, community, and possibility.

At Vranch House, many of the incredible young people we support — in both our school and outpatient services — live with cerebral palsy. Today, we honour their strength, their stories, and their achievements.

? Did you know? Cerebral palsy affects more than 17 million people worldwide, and yet it’s often misunderstood or overlooked. That’s why days like this matter — to raise awareness, to push for inclusion, and to celebrate the amazing individuals who live with CP every day.

? “Cerebral palsy is part of their journey — not the limit of their potential.”

We’re proud to be part of a community that champions inclusion, accessibility, and opportunity for every child and family.

Let’s keep raising awareness, breaking barriers, and building a world that works for everyone.

Vranch House are lucky to be one of @exeter_chiefs_foundation designated charities again this year which means we need volunteers to help us with bucket collections at our allocated match.

Our allocated match is on Sunday 18th January 2026. Exeter Chiefs Vs Cardiff in the men’s challenge cup.

Kick-off is 1pm, so volunteers need to meet at Sandy Park at 11am for our briefing and collect our buckets etc.

We have also been asked to volunteer at another match on Saturday 4th October 2025. Exeter Chiefs Vs Newcastle for a men’s Premiership match.

Kick-off is 3pm, so volunteers need to meet at Sandy Park at 1pm.

We’re looking for up to 40 volunteers for each match, so the more, the merrier! ? If you’d like to join us in supporting Vranch House and The Exeter Chiefs Foundation, at any of the matches, we’d love to have you. ?

Every volunteer at each game helps raise funds and contributes to the final total shared among the 26 charities at the end of the season — ensuring Vranch House gets an even bigger share!

Volunteers must be over 16.

You will need to help with collections before the match, during half time and after the match.

You get to watch the match for free, soak up the great atmosphere and stick around to enjoy the bars/entertainment after if you wish to do so. It is a great day!

If you would like to volunteer, please email Chloe: fundraising@vranchhouse.org
