I studied at The College of Ripon and York St John and gained a BA Honours Degree (Leeds University) in Education, Community and Professional Studies with Human Movement Studies, Sport and Recreation.  I qualified as a Physiotherapist in 1987 at St Thomas' Hospital, London, followed by 3 years working for Oxfordshire Health Authority as a Junior and then Senior 2 Grade Physiotherapist. After a few months of voluntary Physiotherapy work in Kenya, I moved to Exeter to work jointly at Ellen Tinkham School and with Adults with Learning Difficulties in the Community.  I joined the Vranch House Therapy Team in 1993. Since then I have worked within the Vranch House Therapy Team in various different physiotherapy roles, with a year's gap in 1996 after getting married when I  did locum physiotherapy work in London and Exeter, and a sabbatical year in 2013 when I worked as a children's physiotherapist in Peru.
